Do You Want a Neighborhood Grocery Converted to a Wholesale Beer & Soda Distributor?

There will be a meeting of the Planning and Codes Department about a proposed use of the storefront at 1125 Northampton Street. Below is a message from Sophia Feller at the West Ward Neighborhood Partnership:
---------------
Until recently this building housed a Hispanic Grocery Store. It is now empty. The owner of the building is interested in having a beer and soda wholesale distributor move in. The Easton Planning Commission will be reviewing the application on Wednesday February 4, at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1 South Third Street, 5th floor City Council Chambers. The meeting is open to the public.

What do we as a neighborhood think about this? On one hand, it's good not to leave buildings vacant, but I had hoped for a more neighbor-friendly business, like a nice little grocery store, to go in there. A wholesale distributor is not a business that is for the neighborhood. Personally, I'd like to see some more forward-thinking planning from our City with regard to the West Ward. But whether you're in favor or against, it's important to try to show up for this meeting and have your say. I will be stuck at a work meeting that night in New York, but I would really appreciate somebody letting me know how this meeting goes.

Please post your comments for or against, here--and don't forget to vote in the poll at the bottom of this page, if you haven't already--we've got 24 votes so far, and our City Council candidates need to know what concerns us most. (By the way, it is rumored that we may have another WW candidate announcing soon, but I will wait to post it after the announcement is made).

Stay warm everybody, and watch your step--it's slick out there!

Hi Neighbors,

I agree, business are better than vacancies. A wholesale beer distributor sounds like a big operation. It would be great to know that some of those jobs would go to West Ward residents. Is there a way to ask that question at the meeting?

Best,
Ron
