Progress on Street Cleaning!

Below is an article by Michael Duck on the Two Rivers Blog covering the mayor's recent state-of-the-city address. He mentions our WW neighborhood summit meeting and points out that this is one of the major issues that we pressed for. Progress, progress!

Two Rivers Blog Article on New Citywide Street Cleaning Program

It will be important to keep an eye on this issue, to make sure that the program is implemented in a realistic and effective way. A street sweeper is only helpful if cars are moved to accommodate the cleaning, so without an opposite-side-of-the-street parking rule, the sweeper will not be able to get all the litter from the gutters in front of rentals where absentee landlords are not sweeping up daily. Some people may worry about having to move their cars and find parking, but if the street cleaning hours are scheduled in the early morning when most commuters leave anyway, there would be plenty of parking available.

Please click on the link to the City's site on the right of this page, and either write or call the mayor's office to let him know that we appreciate his listening to us (and actually implementing a program based on our feedback). It's important to not only speak up when we're unhappy with policy, but when we happy about progress as well.

Things are looking up! : )

I attended the breakfast for the State of the City. It was packed and people were there fron all over the valley. What I enjoyed was the fact that he not only highlighted the successes but he also addressed the problems. He didn't sugarcoat anything. And he gave credit to the residents of the WW for pushing the city-wide street sweeping program. However, he did say it may not be until the Fall but that it would be this year. Great news for neighborhoods.

I'll say it again--if you want anyone to respect your input, do not post anonymously. This is a forum for debate, and WW residents since the beginning of this blog have emphasized both the good and the bad happening in our neighborhood. Like Lenore said, why hide? Post your email address like everyone else and give a reference to where you live in the WW if you want us to believe that you're an actual resident and not just posting propaganda for the City. No one is going to fall for that. Residents need not be afraid to criticize openly--they will not wake up with a horse's head in their beds. And those pro-city need not worry either--WW resident will not tar and feather you and ride you out on a rail. There is nothing to fear from a good debate--freedom to debate is part of being American.
