Attn: Vegetable Lovers--The Gardens Are Ready!

There is a lot of fresh produce ready to be picked at both community gardens. The larger tomatoes aren't ready yet, but there will be a lot of them when they are, and so far we have avoided Late Blight which has struck many gardens and farms in the state. Cherry tomatoes, however, are starting to ripen, and certain things have been ripe and ready for picking for a while now:

10th & Pine: has kale, beans, peppers, lettuce and herbs ready--I've run by a couple of times to get peppers and cilantro and it was so great to have them so fresh, so close to home, and FREE.

5th & Ferry: has squash, zuccini (sp?), cherry tomatoes, and herbs--I tried a cherry tomato and it was so SWEET, and the green and yellow squash are already huge!--Joanne is picking produce that is ready to eat each day, and setting them on the picnic table in the garden for anyone to take, so make sure to stop by on your way home and see if there's anything you need or want : )

Joanne and Sophia, please post here if there are other items that are ripe and ready that I've forgotten, and if you could give a rundown on the herbs that are in each garden, that would be great too!

By the way, residents have begun to hang out in the 5th & Ferry garden seating area, especially in the mornings, when it's shady until about 11:00 a.m. There is a wi-fi signal available there--I tried it out--it's a little weak, but it works! Joanne and I had coffee at the garden the other day, and I brought my laptop along...it's a great place to sit outside, surrounded by such a lush garden.

Thanks for posting about the gardens Noel, South 10th and Pine garden also has lots of basil. It is in a raised bed situated along the grass alley near the two flower beds on 10th. This bed has other herbs in it as well as basil, among them is oregano, thyme, rosemary, peppermint, and spearmint. The 10th street garden needs some love, anyone with time to pull a few weeds etc. is welcome.

Hello gardeners and friends of the gardens. 5th St. Community Garden is bubbling over with goodies: Squash, cukes, tomatoes, herbs. Please visit the garden at your leisure or join us Wens. eve about 5:30. Sat. 12:30-ish. It's a delightful place to sit-- mostly shaded until about 11. You can watch the morning glories wrap themselves around the fence, the birds will sing to you and there's always a breeze. Before leaving, feel free to harvest some herbs and veggies for dinner!

A quick note of thanks to everyone who has been working on the community gardens! Ken and I were finally able to stop by and spend a little time in both gardens yesterday. Ready to pull weeds...but there were few to be found. We decided on dead heading marigolds instead. :) Both gardens are beautiful...and bountiful. Thanks everyone who is regularly doing work. And...if you haven't been yet...you gotta stop by!
