South Bronx Environmental JusticeTrip: Friday, October 30th

Amina DeBurst, Assistant Director of Intercultural Development at Lafayette College, is inviting residents in the community to participate in a field trip to the South Bronx this Friday, Oct. 30th. This is in anticipation of a talk by Majora Carter (pictured above) entitled "Greening Up the Ghetto" coming up in November at Lafayette. If you are free this Friday, or can take the day off work, this is an exciting opportunity to see first hand the work this nationally known eco-justice leader and her team have done in the Bronx. The trip is free, courtesy of Lafayette College, and the bus departs from Lafayette's campus on College Hill at 8:00am. After the walking tour, the bus will leave New York at 3:00pm to arrive back in Easton byefore 5:00pm--here are the details:

South Bronx Environmental JusticeTrip
Friday, October 30th, 2009

This trip is designed for students, faculty, staff and residents who have an interest in environmental justice. This tour is an opportunity to hear and see how various sustainability projects have transformed the environment and empowered the people of the Hunts Point community, once known as the most toxic neighborhood in New York City.

Each project on this unique sustainability tour was initiated by the work of Majora Carter, environmental justice advocate, economic consultant, and founder of the Sustainable South Bronx.

To sign up for this trip email debursta@lafayette.edu and more detailed information about the sites you will experience and other logistics will follow.
Bus departs from Williams Center 8:00am and returns 5:00pm

I hope to see you on the bus!
Yours,
Noel Jones
Neighbors of Easton

The actual text of the document was mispelled; it was a quote from the homepage of Noel's blog. You will return to Easton before 5:00 PM.

If you are planning on going, I would email Amina DeBurst and ask where residents can park since the bus leaves from Lafayette's campus.

A link to the Lafayette College campus map is below.

Thanks, Alan. And yes--the trip to New York on Friday is FREE. It is a Coach bus that is taking us so it's first come, first served, but there were plenty of seats left as of a couple of days ago.

Here is an inspirational video of an inspirational presentation to Al Gore and others that Joanne Czeck forwarded to me:

I am really excited to go!

Will do, Tim! I would love to ride up with as many blog readers as possible--even the drive to NY will be a great time to hang out and talk about the issues that we're making progress on in the neighborhood. And after seeing the Majora Carter video, I'm really excited to get to meet her and see what she's done in the S. Bronx!

So if you can get the day off on Friday, GET ON THE BUS! It's going to be a fun trip and FREE, just bring some lunch money : ) For any parents considering going, we will be back in Easton between 4:30-5pm.

This trip was truly inspiring--to see what some of the most disadvantaged residents in New York have accomplished through organizing and inspiring political will is truly impressive. It was great to see that Mayor Panto cleared his schedule to get on the bus, and our guide, Marta, of Sustainable South Bronx said that it was the first time any mayor had ever taken the entire walking tour of all of the brownfields that have been turned into green space along the riverfront.

I will be posting later about this trip, as we get closer to Majora Carter's Nov. 12th talk at Lafayette--everyone please save the date (7:30pm)--this woman and her organization are phenomenal, and she really wants to see as many people from our community there as can make it!

I was so glad I went to the South Bronx on Friday. I want to thank Lafayette College and Amina for allowing member sof the community to go and I enjoyed meeting studetns and staff and spending time with htem. Had I known their were going to be unfilled seats I would have invited some staff members to attend the tour with me.

I went primarily because I truly believe that a community of engaged residents is a thriving community. I will not be able to attend her presentaion at Lafayette on Nov. 10 and 11 so I wanted to at least wanted to see it forst hand to determine how these ideas can be used to our advantage in Easton.

I appreciated the members of the community that went with us because I know you all have busy schedules.
