THE WEST WORD Is Out!

Posted by: Noel Jones

A brand new "newsletter" (really more of a newspaper, at 20 pages) has been produced by West Ward residents, thanks to funding from CACLV/WWNP, entitle THE WEST WORD.  Several WW residents, including myself, contributed articles to this new tri-annual newsletter, but aside from the writing, what really impresses me about it is the photography and layout--this is easily the freshest looking publication in miles!

Below is a message from the editorial committee--the paper is free, and available at cafe's, pubs, stores and other businesses around the city. To read the pdf version, click on the link called Downloadable Documents on the side bar of this home page.

Progress, progress--this is exciting!

Dear Neighbors,

We’re pleased to announce that The West Word a new community free newspaper is out and will be distributed tonight and tomorrow to your neighborhood deli, restaurant, pub, Laundromat, and corner store. This inaugural issue features articles by Nikkita Frazier on the 600 block improvements, Gavin Vincent, on Chansonnette Theatre’s new drama club at the Teen Center, Terrance Miller, on reducing open air drug sales and Bob Fehnel, on a growing health concern in our local waters and many other articles of interest. Happy Reading!

This paper was conceived and created by your neighbors, its aim is to (1) improve the public's

perception of the West Ward; (2) develop neighborhood pride; (3) inform; and (4) encourage economic development. We believe the inaugural issue of the newspaper is a good start towards accomplishing these goals.  We hope you agree, and look forward to your feedback and input.

Please join us at the launch party, scheduled for 6 pm, Thursday, February 18 at Ashley's. [Unfortunately, we discovered that this date conflicts with the City's public meeting on the proposed Easton intermodal transit center project. Nevertheless, the launch party will be going on into the evening, so both can be accommodated.]

Looking forward to the future.

Thanks for posting this Noel.
FYI:
Saturday's snowstorm blew The West Word's distribution effort off course, so, while many copies of the paper have been circulated, we are looking for volunteers to help distribute the remaining copies. We have a master list of 144 business establishments in the West Ward where we would like to distribute the newsletter, as well as locations downtown/South Side/College Hill. To help “get The Word out,” please join our distribution effort on Monday & Tuesday. Stop by the West Ward Neighborhood Partnership between 9am to 5 pm for a stack of papers and a distribution list. Just an hour of your time will make a big dent in the list. Thank you.

The online version was great. Our residents should say an extra "thank you" to the entire staff for the hard work.

The personal biographies allow us to really get to know our neighbors - like Miss Daisy!

My father once explained to me what "strategic" - as in having a strategic plan - means. He said it was finding - amidst all the multiple problems, issues, and possibilities for improvement, - finding that one thing that when acted on would alter all the rest. Like in playing pool, I suppose. I think this West Word is a strategic accomplishment with respect to the goal of revitalizing the West Ward. As a resident I feel uplifted and pleased to see so many faces and places featured and I deeply respect the efforts of those who must have worked really really hard to bring out this first issue. Congratulations to CACLV! Luisa Garcia, thank you for putting our article into Spanish and David Brinn Williams, thank you for the large accompanying photo of diverse seeds. Its good to know that diversity is valued in our community. And that seeds are valued too.
