Political Theater for State of the Union Address TONIGHT, 9pm

President Obama may be the leading man of tonight's show, but
Michele Bachmann aims to be the leading lady.

Michele Bachmann (R--MN) will make history tonight by giving a second response speech to President Obama's state of the union address, breaking with the Republican party and their chosen spokesman, Paul Ryan (R-WI), to put forth a Tea Party message, separate from the Republicans' response. I say fine--all parties with representation in Congress should be able to respond, but along that same rationale, why aren't the Independents in Congress responding as well? You can watch the coverage tonight at 9pm on CNN.

In other political theater, Sen. Ted Udall (D-NM) and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) are following Chuck Schumer's (D-NY) lead and are sitting together for the speech, rather than sitting with their own parties. Other members of Congress are planning on doing the same. What do readers think? Is this just a symbolic gesture that will go nowhere in terms of real cross-party cooperation in Congress, or is this indicative of a genuine desire to end the polarized stand-off between the two sides and foster good will, a la the new No Labels movement?

Perhaps the greatest feat of theater slated for tonight is the President's plan to assert that we can both institute a spending freeze while investing in infrastructure at the same time...this is going to be interesting--please post your impressions here!

I for one was happy with the speech by Pres Obama. Though to be fair I skimmed the Tea party stuff.
Like anyone who would like to see us achieve actual first world nation status again, I support a functional health care bill.
I was also impressed that Pres. Obama admitted to the one thing that the GOP and other right wingers have refused to admit through out and that is that the rules have changed, and that we as a nation will have to do more to get ahead or simply fall even further behind.
All in all I'm happy I voted for the Man and intend to again.
Peace,
David
A little FYI, The USA is currently ranked as the 13th best place in the world to live. We are 30th in education vs other nation and have the odd distinction of having more of our citizens imprisoned, on probation or parole than any other nation...

The most encouraging parts of the State of the Union address:

National goals:
--85 percent of the nation’s energy from clean energy by 2035
--80 percent of Americans with access to high-speed rail within 25 years
--98 percent with access to high-speed wireless within 5 years.

Among other proposed cuts, my favorite--corporate welfare to oil companies:

The President proposes cutting taxpayer subsidies for oil companies to help pay for his clean-energy initiative. “I don’t know if you’ve noticed,” the president said, “but they’re doing just fine on their own. So instead of subsidizing yesterday’s energy, let’s invest in tomorrow’s.”

I'd like to hear other reader's thoughts on proposals in this speech...
