Whatever you do today--GET OUTSIDE. It's going to be 63 degrees and sunny! But don't go thinking that winter is over, because the weather will get steadily colder after that until we get--you guessed it--another WINTRY MIX on Tuesday, with a low of 17 degrees.
So get out and play while you can!
Now, the good news is that Tuesday looks like a bit of an anomaly, and all the days before and after are in the 40s and 50s, so it's possible that Spring is here and the groundhog was right after all...
Here's the 10-day forecast.
The avid gardeners in town tell me that February is the month to order seeds and start them under grow lights or in the window sills of your house--here's a great web site where you can get heirloom seeds for your garden: Seeds of Change
So have fun in the sun today, and if anyone else has good gardening web sites you'd like to recommend, please post a link in a comment here!

Well, today is a work day. Wash and hang all of the bedding for that springtime scent, open the windows to air out the house, maybe break up a bit more of the ice out in front of the house, that sort of thing. Still, I'm thankful for the break in the gloom.
Peace,
David
Hi all, something is on my mind, so I'm going to go off topic.
So- how about this mess in Wisconsin?
The possible destruction of the union and collective bargaining concept that will soon or late have a real impact upon areas like our own?
While I support the union concept, I can see how in some ways people have had it up to here with them. Of course, the question is will being rid of them work? Or will we slide back into the pre-union days, of rampant underpayment for work, child labor, etc...?
Personally I think the answer lies somewhere in the middle, and many unions nation wide have made concessions. not locally, but nationally to keep jobs and such.
If no one much minds I'd like to see how we all feel on this. In Wisconsin it has gotten to the point where the states elected democrats have fled the state and are being searched for by state police in an effort to force the bill through. I'm not kidding, you can't make this stuff up. Still, even if it is not Wisconsin a handful of other states all under GOP control have similar legislation pending.
I have addressed this to some point at-
http://homeownersofeaston.blogspot.com/2011/02/should-we-kill-union.html-
But as this is by far the larger forum maybe we should discuss it here.
Thanks,
David
a quick aside, for an area like our own, union busting legislation would speed and empower our ability to deal with groups like our teachers union...but at what price?
we were one of the first to have a roof garden downtown, now everybody got one those big copycats....Tunsie
I forgot to tell everybody....I love noel///anonymous
We prefer park seeds, though for flowers and ground cover we like the guy up by the Turkey hill and the fireworks factories.
Still, how 'bout that union busting?
I think right now it's pretty relevant here in easton. I can't and don't support it , particularly as the unions in question have made sacrifices, but well folks this is sort of huge. Pa as basically a company state will jump on this.
Peace,
David
I do like seeds of change BTW, but we prefer hybrids at least in the short term. I wouldn't mind some heirloom roses, but we'll see.
Peace,
David
David, I will be posting on this soon...I have a meeting, but probably later this evening...this is very much on my mind, and potentially very relevant to our area soon...
If you go to my blog and hit embed, it will give you the code to post the video. Feel free, I prefer to be complimentary. on second thought- cut and paste-
okay, not an option blogger won't let me post the html tag for the clip....thought I'd save you a step- sorry ;)
Peace,
David
BTW- walmart has decent mint for ground cover, but we've had no luck with snow drops, the area doesn't seem to support them, shame....our tulips do well and are into their third year. our fig tree, home depot- is doing well , but has to be wrapped for the winter.
dont get seeds go to miller hardware inwest easton and he has plants already started for U....you need to transplant them.....tunsie
my brothers kids save the cherry pits and then they buried them all and a cherry tree grew there....my sound man was giving me advice on lemon trees....he said he buried an entire 2 or 3 lemons and that is how his tree grew....my neighbor has a roof garden with trees on the roof and chairs out there so they sit at nite....tunsie
Mostly we buy bulbs and I am unaware of anywhere in easton that sells them. I am hoping to throw together a few growing boxes with non-local soil (we have a toxic waste dump next door) so we stick to flowers.
Our butterfly bushes came with the house and must be at least sixty years old. They are nearly nine feet tall. I'd put up pictures, but I can't do stills in blogger. Still, we'll see.
PEace,
David
Sadly, I'm dealing with a tooth infection, so I'm in and out tonight. If I miss the topic for a bit, it's just bad timing. I will hopefully be alive and well in the morning. As hopefully noel can attest, I'm really not that hard to argue with...
I'm a fan of acts and figures, but I'm no rocket scientist. Present a reasoned and supported argument and you may sway me.
It's been done,
Peace,
David
