Charlie Dent
Posted by: Noël Jones

Our Congressman, Charlie Dent (R), will be available to hear constituents for one hour from 10am  - 11:30am FRIDAY, March 18th at the Northampton County Courthouse.

Here's the event announcement on his facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=171732396212418

I know it's extremely short notice, and once again an important public meeting is being held during the work day when most residents cannot attend, but if you are a freelancer, unemployed, disabled or retired, please come out tomorrow morning and speak up to let Dent know that WE DO NOT WANT GAS DRILLERS FRACKING WITH OUR DRINKING WATER IN THE DELAWARE.

The event will be held in Room 3116.

See you there!

Sal Panto Says:
I have just been appointed to the Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee (EENR) of the National League of Cities. I served on this committee the last time I was MAyor and rose to Vice-Chairman.

Our committee has agreed to make natural gas a major issue this year, including fracking. Our goal will be to develop policy to present to the entire membership for adoption and then it becomes part of our lobbying efforts with Congress.

On the State level we have to keep the pressure on -- a full court press. In addition to the environmental risk we are the only state that doesn't tax that industry.

Glad to hear you are a part of this committee... if it is going to happen, it needs to be well-regulated, and our area should definitely be getting taxes for it!

Thanks, Mayor Panto--this is great news. With regard to the severance tax, there is a duality going on here that needs to be addressed clearly:

1. Severance tax should be on ALREADY EXISTING drilling that is grandfathered out of any moratoriums.

2. To fight for a severance tax going forward is to suggest that we already know that there is a safe way to frack without contaminating drinking water, air, soil, livestock, food, and we have no evidence of that as of yet. WE NEED A STATEWIDE MORATORIUM ON ALL NEW DRILLING until the EPA cumulative impact study is completed in 2012 and we see what it says about health risks. We must all avoid the gold-rush mentality that says that a) fracking involves dangerous health risks for 15 million people but, b) might be good for us because of the revenue it could bring in to plug holes in the state budget.

Thanks for your efforts on this, Mayor!

IF possible, I will be there, big if...but I intend to be present. It'll make a nice change for me. I'd like a word about the unions and fracking. I approve of harvesting this resource, I'd just rather not die from it.
Peace,
David

And yes, i also noticed the timing, working folks not wanted...call in sick, call in dead, be there...make an effort.

I hope someone will bring up the fact that these meetings need to be held when most people can attend, not during the day, during the work week.

I get the feeling from the constantly annoying phone messages from Dent's office that this event is geared more towards the person with mundane problems like a missing SS check or some deal with their IRS returns. I do not think they expect people to show up en mass and question major policy decisions.

Anyone going, please let me know if this is the case.

Did anyone go?
How did it go?

Yes, about 40 residents made it and a myriad of concerns were raised, but the one most repeated was energy. Stand by...I will be posting soon...
