A Sleeping Bee Says...

Posted by: Noël Jones

Okay, by now you know that I am worst groundhog in the world, as my announcements of Spring so far have been closely followed by snowstorms. But I snapped this pic in my back yard the other day, and I am determined to believe that when bees are sleeping in crocuses that it really is Spring after all. That is--if it was really sleeping...and yes, I saw it breathing, so it was not dead. Perhaps it was just drunk from hanging out too long at the Crocus Bar's happy hour? There's probably some entomologist out there reading this, ready to burst my bubble and tell me that bees don't sleep--ssshhh--if that's the case don't tell me. Leave me to my fantasy. I prefer to believe that bees sleep, and get drunk...and that it's finally Spring.

Noel,
I think that bees, flies and other non-warmblooded insects tend to have their activity levels determined by the air temperature. I'm guessing your sleeping friend felt warm enough to go hunting for food but then got too cold to collect it. He should finish the job when the sun warms him enough. Sounds like sleep to me.

as a former jr. entomologist, i can attest to the fact that "yes, virginia...bees do sleep."...but only the male bees.
