I hope they do a better job with the curb ramps than they did in SouthSide Bethlehem! It seems like they came up with random approaches for each corner, so there's no consistency. In a couple of places, they installed push-buttons [to get a 'walk' light], but placed them so they stick out into the travel zone for wheelchairs...

federal regs on this issue are rediculous!!! check out the ones the state made the city put in at 6th and Northampton Street.

I would like to comment on the negative comments however on the inconvenience to motorists. Get over it. These repairs are needed and they would be the first to complain if the water line broke and they were without water for a few days.

This is a big help to Easton residents.

the cross walk push button at the corner of 6th/Walnut/Northampton Streets in Easton is ridiculous!

agreed, though, that the work has to happen...

They should have a parade over the bridge before and after the repairs!

I dont like that the work has to be done in different stages...they will have to come back to connect the buildings to the main water line...when they were packing the dirt back into the ground the dust cloud went in the air 3 stories tall.it was dirty on the street for 2 weeks......tunsie....i love u noel

i wonder how they could minimize that...

From what was stated in the paper there are several reasons. When the work is intially done the trenches are just backfilled and have to sit for 2 months so that they settle. They are then saw cut and backfilled permanently and these are much smoother. The handicalled ramps then get installed and when they are completed that is about the time that the trenches are ready and milling and paving can begin.

I spoike to the mayor's office and permanent trenching is 90% completed in the ww and south side. Permanent trenching on college hill starts this Monday.

All handicapped ramps are to be in by the end of August and then milling and paving should be completed by October 1st.

This is a great project for us especially the replacement of the gas lines and services. We don't want another Allentown.

I think the work going on in the city is great. Finally there are improvements to our infrastructure. The US is a mess when it comes to our physical needs -- our highways, bridges and the underground networks are deplorable.

This is what WPA was all about -- putting people to work making America stronger. Why not bring it back?

I've heard the WPA question asked a lot lately.

What I find interesting is that people see to fall into only one of two camps when it come to FDR--either he was one of the greatest presidents of all time and saved America from the Great Depression, or he was one of the worst presidents of all time and set us on the road to unsustainable entitlements that haunt the national debt and deficit now.

Thoughts?
