Easton Basketball Hopeful and Honor Roll Student Dies of Mysterious Illness

Posted by: Noël Jones

Pamela Sroka-Holzmann for the Express-Times reports the tragic death of an Easton Area High School student, due to a mysterious illness that came upon him and took his life within hours. 15 year-old Lewis Ogioba fell ill at basketball practice on Tuesday evening, was transported to Easton Hospital and then discharged. After he went home that evening, he began to feel even worse and was transported back to the hospital
where he died Wednesday morning. The cause of death is still being determined.

My heart goes out to the family and many young friends of this inspirational young man, who was apparently popular with many, excelling not only on the basketball court and on the honor roll, but also as a friend that fellow students came to for advice. If you see anyone wearing a T-Shirt with "R.I.P." over a basketball and the number 14 on it, that was Lewis Ogioba's number. An R.I.P. facebook page for Ogioba has 1,631 friends to date, and the "wall" is full of posts from friends, family and other community members.

Please feel free to post condolences to family and friends here as well. If there is an update on the cause of death, I will post it. This is such a sad loss for our community.

this happens often to young sports players...In thier ZEAL to get on the team and possibly get drafted by someone like DUKE or MARYLAND or one of the other BIG teams.they skip thier physicals. In philadelphia a few years ago a player collapsed on the court, and they found out that he had an underlying heart problem that was OVERLOOKED in his physical that was required by the high school before playing any sport.these kids think that those heart or other ailments wont come to haunt them because they are young. It is sad, especially for the family.....DEATH waits for no one and it is not discriminatory......I yuv U noel....tunsie

tunsie, i hear you, but in this case, i think the cause must be a complete mystery to the family, otherwise the hospital would not have discharged him when they took him in, as the problem would have been discussed.

what i'm sure the grieving family and community will want to know, is how a boy can be declared healthy and sent home from a hospital, only to die hours later? this is deeply worrisome, and a true tragedy.
