Another Community Garden Breaking Ground: Fri., April 17th

Exciting news from Sophia at the West Ward Neighborhood Partnership regarding the groundbreaking for St. Anthony's--Canton 6 community garden on 10th & Pine:

I want to update everyone on the latest news about the 10th and Pine community garden. On Wednesday, April 8th Arkie DeStefano, his neighbor Dennis, and I went to ABE Block located off 611 north and picked up 50 - 8” seconds of concrete blocks. Today, Friday April 10t h , Dan Cannon volunteered to use his truck and his time to make two more trips and picked up 94 more. We now have a total of 144 concrete blocks waiting to be made into four 8 foot long by 4 foot wide by 24 inch deep raised beds. Also, thanks to Dan, we have the fence posts for the fence and thanks to Wayne Lacey we have several 6 X 6 pressure treated timbers to use as edging for the beds along the perimeter of the lot. Dave Hopkins has said the city will pick up and dump the leaf mulch and dirt for the beds and the Easton Cemetery is supplying the leaf mulch.

We will be meeting at the garden site on Friday, April 17, at 9:00 a.m. to build the raised beds. Bring work gloves and shovels, and wear work boots. We still need to find a source of landscape felt to put in the bottom of the beds and up the sides, if anyone has any ideas about an inexpensive or donated source let me know or if anyone has ideas about an alternative to landscape felt, please let me know as well.

I’m really excited about actually getting the beds laid out, filled with dirt and ready to plant, fast forward to mid-July when the neighborhood kids need a snack and go to the community garden for cherry tomatoes and cucumbers, your making a stir-fry for dinner with peppers and summer squash out of the beds, many neighbors have donated flowers and shrubs for the outer beds, they are blooming and looking beautiful, someone has donated a park bench and people are relaxing on it and enjoying the flowers, someone else has brought out a small folding table and a couple of chairs and is looking to play a game of chess… See you on Friday

On Saturday April 18, the South 5th and Ferry Community Garden will have their workday. Please spread the word to friends and neighbors about these two work days, we specifically need people with masonry and carpentry skills.

On Sunday, April 19, Master Gardener, Lyn Prior will be giving a class about soil at the Southside Community Garden, 902 Philadelphia Road. Lyn will talk for about 20 minutes, she will do some soil testing, and a load of compost will be delivered (donated by PitchForks) to dig into the soil. Everyone is welcome just bring a shovel!

I hope to see you all at either the ground breaking on Fri. 4/17 or on Sat. 4/18!

I have a partial roll of garden felt that you may have. I am not sure how much is left on the roll. I purchased it to use under my patio and believe there is quite a bit left over.
I will try and bring it by on Friday morning.

Hi, Noel. I've just posted an item about this on The Morning Call's Easton blog: http://bit.ly/x7oE.

I won't be able to be there, but I hope there's a good turnout!
