Last Day to Vote for the Kind of Stores/Businesses You Want in the West Ward!

If you haven't already, please vote at the bottom of this page for the kind of stores and/or businesses that you would like to see in the neighborhood! I will be passing this on to City officials, including our new neighborhood rep, Mike Fleck, so that they know what types of economic development we would like to see in the West Ward. So far, the winner is Grocery Store with 80% of the vote. Scroll to the bottom of this page to case your vote!

Of course everyone would like to see a grocery store in any neighborhood of our city but it just won't happen. Heck even our little corner stores don't get the support they need and close after a few months. Your organization should be promoting a shop local program -- that's the message that needs to be told. Even College Hill lost their local store when Sal's closed. Americans want to get in their car and drive to the big box stores because they thhink they are cheaper. -- NOT!

How many west ward residents have been to a commercial establishment in our neighborhood? That's the question to ask. And how many times. My next door neighbor went to 25th st to get her meds -- I walk to 9th and Northampton.

This is a good point--I hope others will chime in on this one. While David and I do go to 25th for the bigger shopping trips, we also regularly walk to Yonk's on 10th & Ferry, to the pharmacy on 9th & Northampton, to Porters on 7th & Northampton, to La Pazza on 13th & Ferry, and we've also eaten at Lupita across from the courthouse, the Puerto Rican restaurant on Northampton & 6th, Cherubina on 10th & Northampton, and Josephina's on Butler & 10th-ish. We've also stopped in at Noto's deli when Yonk's was closed. The neighborhood stores are great for some things like quick milk and eggs, but don't offer much in the way of fresh produce or bread. If there were a real grocery with a quality selection in the neighborhood, we would much rather walk there than go to 25th street. A hardware & gardening supplies store would be a relief too, and a lot of people I've talked to wish there were some sort of central neighborhood cafe where neighbors could get a good cup of coffee, read the news and swap stories, gardening tips, etc. If such a place existed, we would be regulars!
