New Grants for the West Ward

Below is an article on new grants awarded to Easton and targeted for for neighborhood improvement programs in the West Ward and South Side. As you can see in the article, the specific uses for the money are still being worked out, and the money must be spent within 18 months of receipt, so public input should be taken into account as soon as possible:

Express Times Article by Ed Sieger on $1 Million Grant for the West Ward

Easton received a $475,000 federal Economic Development Initiative grant and a $500,000 Neighborhood Stabilization Program grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development.

Please read the article and post your opinions on how the money should be used here!

The year of the neighborhoods ---- FINALLY! Thank you Mayor for going after neighborhood grants and not just downtown grants. So far you have been a man of your word.

Yes, great news! Everybody please post here regarding any meetings planned where the necessary public input will be taken in on the spending of these grants. We need wider public input on grant spending that affects our neighborhood.

Noel, you talk about wider public involvement in the spending of these grants. They are grants and by their very nature they come with restrictions on what their money can be used for in the city. Very few grants are open ended to allow the grantee latitude as to how they are spent. I am involved to some extent with the Simon Silk Mill project and we have received over $900,000 in 2008 alone in grants. One grant for example was $200,000 for soil remediation. We applied and received the grant for that purpose.

The grants recently announced are for housing. they can't be used to lure a grocery store to the west ward, or build another park. Housing rehabilitation, acquisition of foreclosured homes, low interst loans are some of the things I read these grants can be used for in WW and SS.
