I know that one question I have for them is that I saw in the paper that the new officers will be on "foot, bike and car patrols"--I want to hear how much of their time will be spent in the neighborhood on foot, because that's a really important component of successful neighborhood policing. You can't get to know residents from a car, and the bike patrols, while nice to see, did not interface much with residents. I hope that these new officers are ready to get to know the neighborhood on a personal level.
I believe these are the two officers that were introduced at the block watch meeting I attended in January. Chief Palmer, when introducing them, stated that what they do is going to very varied. The idea would be to have them approach different problems in different ways. Each day could bring a different shift and a different responsibility.
Remember that I could be wrong and the two new officers could be two completely different officers.
COMMUNITY POLICING........pinch me I guess I am not in Kansas any more.. Seriously,I am grateful and perhaps you are right Noel, walking and biking are the ways to go.Hopefully with some infusion into Block Watch we might see "Safe Havens" and with Spring approaching I for one will welcome their presence.
Thanks to everyone who made it out to meet our new neighborhood police officers! Russ Dempko and Matt Rush seem like good guys who are enthusiastic about engaging with residents on a personal level--there is a definite shift happening in the philosophy of the EPD and an emphasis is being placed on coordinating with residents more--it will be nice to see Matt and Russ on bikes and on foot as the weather gets warmer (and yes, they told us to call them Matt and Russ)!
If you would like to contact these officers on any matter in the neighborhood, here is their contact info:
